Vietnamese rail crossings are notoriously unsafe due to poor signage and lack of barricades. But some pedestrians and motorists aren’t doing themselves any favours by crossing in front of oncoming trains, some of which travel up to 80km per hour.

Statistics show that the national railway grid currently has 5,751 crossing points. 651 are staffed with wardens, 310 have automatically operated warning signals, and 555 others have warning signs. “The remaining 4,200 points are unstaffed or have no signals,” according to Tuoi Tre

In the last seven months alone there have been two major train derailments resulting from impacts with passing vehicles at unmarked crossings.

As evidenced by the photos below, however, many pedestrians and motorists ignore the warning signs that do exist, setting up the potential for deadly accidents.
