Nearly 30 flights were cancelled yesterday morning as tropical storm Vamco approached central Vietnam. Travelers departing from or heading to Danang found themselves stranded as wind speeds in the city hit up to 75kph, bringing torrential rains and low visibility.
The storm was expected to touch down in the area between Danang and Quang Ngai in addition to bringing torrential rains for southern Vietnam, according to Tuoi Tre.
As of Monday morning, Vamco was located 140km away, gathering in the East Sea. Upon touchdown, the storm certainly made its presence known: throughout the coastal provinces of central Vietnam, boats, houses and vehicles were destroyed, while fallen trees littered the streets. Schools were closed and fisherman headed for land as the mounting storm showed its full force.
Today, the tropical storm is expected to weaken to a tropical depression as it moves across the mountainous terrain of Vietnam and Laos, however heavy rain will persist until Friday. Dangers such as flash floods and landslides may also occur in mountainous areas.
Vamco is the third tropical storm to hit Vietnam this year, with another three expected to arrive in the coming months.
