It's always a good idea to listen to your parents. Especially when one of them is holding a lit match and a bucket of gasoline.

Thirteen-year-old Nguyen Xuan Thanh learned this lesson on Friday, when his mother rocked up to the computer game shop he was in and lit him on fire for skipping school to play video games, reports Thanh Nien.

When Thanh's teacher called to inform his mother, Nguyen Thi Thom of Lam Dong province, that her son had cut class on both Thursday and Friday of last week, the woman was furious. After a frantic search for the boy, Thom happened upon him in a local games shop, doused the boy with gasoline and lit him on fire.

Nguyen Thanh Trung, the owner of the games shop, saw the whole thing. “The flames rose up to a meter high in my shop. I took a blanket and wrapped his body to stop the fire,” he told Thanh Nien. “Thom was ranting and scolding the boy when the flames engulfed him. Only when the fire was put out did she regain her calm and joined us in rushing the boy to the hospital.”

Thanh was taken to the emergency room at the local hospital before being transferred to Saigon for treatment to burns on his face, neck and ears. Local authorities have filed charges but are allowing Thom to take care of her son while he's in hospital.
