Vietnam will soon be back in the good graces of the internet gods, as the country’s international web connection will finally be fixed tonight, after weeks of service interruptions.
Damaged during Typhoon Nida earlier this month, the Asia America Gateway (AAG) cable was patched up at 2am this morning. Repair teams are currently in the process of reburying the cable, and connections should be optimal by 8pm tonight, reports Tuoi Tre.
Over the weekend it was predicted that the cable repairs would be delayed a second time due to bad weather, but in a rare example of good news for internet users here, they were completed earlier than expected.
Vietnam began using the AAG for its international internet connection in late 2009. The cable, which spans 20,000 kilometers and links Southeast Asia with the United States, broke twice in 2014 and three times in 2015. The US$560 million system is a joint venture among 19 partners, including Vietnam’s Viettel, VNPT, FPT and STP.
Given the routine issues which plague the AAG connection, Vietnamese companies are currently exploring three additional undersea cables to ensure better internet performance.
