Residents of Hanoi’s “model street” are rebelling against a rule on uniform signage.
In May, Thanh Xuan District’s Le Trong Tan Street underwent a VND225 billion (US$10 million) renovation, reports Tuoi Tre. Among the new regulations imposed on the model street was a stipulation requiring local business owners to adhere to strict rules regarding the size, shape, color and fonts used on signage advertising their businesses. All signs on Le Trong Tan must be either red or blue and no more than 1.1 meters high. These banners are to be hung 3.2-3.3 meters from the ground.
However, after seven months, some residents of Le Trong Tan are no longer on board with the uniform signage regulation and have begun to change their banners to make them stand out from the crowd. Business owners claim conforming to the strict stipulations on advertising have caused a dip in profits as their businesses have faded into the background.
Local authorities, however, are maintaining the rules. Head of the secretariat of Thanh Xuan’s administration Vuong Thi Van Khanh told the news outlet that residents whose banners do not follow the mandatory guidelines face a warning and possibly a fine.
