On Tuesday, guidebook publisher and thorn in the side of locals everywhere Lonely Planet released its list of 'Best Value Destinations for 2016'. Of course, Vietnam was on it.
Alongside a pretty random slew of destinations, including Estonia, East Africa, Quebec City and Timor-Leste, were Hanoi and Saigon, both of which received not only recognition from Lonely Planet but also budget travel website The Price of Travel. The site ranked Vietnam's two largest metropolises among the most affordable of 31 Asian cities.
The Price of Travel confirmed what most locals know to be true: travelers can get by on US$20 a day or less, including sights, accommodation and delicious street food. Good job, Saigon and Hanoi: stay cheap.
