This young year saw the acclaimed Vietnamese-American writer return to Vietnam for the first time in nearly half a century. About half-way through The Housemaid (Co Hau Gai) I felt an odd sensation. It wasn’t from the gore and panic on display in this horror film but from the fact that not once had there been an overt mention of the ongoing First Indochina War. Set in 1953, the year before Dien Bien Phu, the war occupies the central driving force of the film’s plot but references to it are only found in the margins and allegorical dark corners of the narrative.
