It started as a personal project that has turned into much more.
François Bibonne, a French documentarian who spent 15 months in Vietnam to explore the home country of his grandmother, has released a trailer for the documentary which stemmed from his trip.
While here, Bibonne met Honna Tetsuji, the conductor of the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra. Bibonne was allowed to begin filming rehearsals and concerts, which eventually led to a much larger project: telling a story about traditional Vietnamese music, and its relationship to western music, across the country.
Once Upon a Bridge in Vietnam, as the in-production documentary is named, now has a brief trailer showing some of its subject matter: the introduction of western classical music to Vietnam, the musicality of the Vietnamese language, and more.
Check out the trailer below, and the project's Indiegogo page for more information.
