State-run television network VTV has made the shortlist in three categories of this year’s Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Prizes.

The ABU, which consists of 281 radio and television broadcasters from 61 countries, is set to hold its annual awards ceremony on October 24 in Bali, Indonesia, reports Tuoi Tre.

Three VTV segments made the shortlist ahead of the ceremony. They are among the 55 programs chosen out of over 200 entries.

In the Documentary category, VTV’s Toi Dep. Ban Cung The! (I Am Beautiful. You, Too!) is nominated alongside entries from South Korea, Hungary, Germany and Japan. The program explores the lives of disabled Vietnamese who overcome obstacles within society in order to live with confidence.

Duong Toi Truong (Way to School), a brief documentary following young minority children in northern Vietnam’s Son La province on their epic and, at times, treacherous 28-kilometer walk to school, is listed among entries from Germany, Iran and Sri Lanka in the Children category. The 17-minute short already picked up an accolade at last year’s National Television Festival.

Finally, Co Dau Bo Tron (Runaway Brides), a news segment about Vietnamese women who have fled marriages to abusive foreign husbands, became Vietnam’s first-ever shortlisted program in the category of News Reporting.

The latter two programs were also selected as two of the four finalists for ABU’s Television Special Jury Prize.

VTV is the only Vietnamese broadcaster featured at this year’s ABU Prizes ceremony.
