Probably the most iconic and historic bridge in Vietnam, Long Biên Bridge has yet to receive much needed care for its current deteriorating condition (link). However, local residents don’t seem to mind much but their own business.

Built over 100 years ago, Long Biên Bridge is unsafe in a myriad of ways. Besides unimaginable traffic, the bridge has a whole host of other issues. People merrily pose for pictures having not having a clue about the rusted pillars supported by rotting wooden beams underneath. People jump over the central divide between traffic lanes and train tracks, and coffee stalls, a busy market, and even a “public toilet” all occupy space on the bridge.
The bridge was bombed heavily during the American War and has been reconstructed multiple times. Due to lack of funding in recent decades, its condition has deteriorated to the point where authorities have expressed deep concerns about the structure’s integrity.
Fortunately, earlier this month it was announced that the government has earmarked US$14 million for the restoration of the bridge which was described by one writer as “a misshapen but essential component of Hanoi’s heritage.”
