The proposal was presented with other amendments at a Standing Committee meeting of the National Assembly on Tuesday by Minister of Justice Ha Hung Cuong that are “based on feedback from more than 7.5 million people,” according to Vietnam News.
Said feedback included the suggestion that while citizens should have the right to choose their names, the State should create specific rules to guide them. “Many full names do not suit the country's culture,” concluded the newspaper.
The amendment would also include a provision requiring those applying for Vietnamese citizenship to have a Vietnamese name.
It may take some time for the legislation to take effect, however, as the NA Committee on Legal Affairs said that it should be considered more carefully and get more feedback.
It's unclear if the change would apply to new names or be administered retroactively.
