Vietnamese people have long upheld a tradition of respecting the elderly and maintaining strong intergenerational bonds within families, creating emotional support amidst life’s uncertainties. Just a few decades ago, households where grandparents, parents, and children all lived together under one roof were still common, symbolizing harmony and familial blessings.
“Cây xanh thì lá cũng xanh
Cha mẹ hiền lành để đức cho con.”
As Vietnam enters the 21st century, the country is gradually facing a rapidly aging population, along with new challenges in maintaining family connections. Grandparents and parents now have greater access to healthcare and longer life expectancy; however, they also tend to experience greater loneliness in old age as life becomes increasingly fast-paced.
Cây Xanh & Lá Cũng Xanh (CX&LCX) was initiated by Cuội Theater with the support of various experts and artists to create a friendly learning and recreational space for elderly people, empowering grandparents and older adults to continue pursuing their interests, participating in family activities, and connecting with younger generations and society.
The first CX&LCX event, taking place throughout 24/5/2026, is an inclusive space designed for all generations in the family to explore themselves through games, sharing activities, art, psychology, and guidance on caring for the mind-body-spirit of themselves and their loved ones. Activities are designed so that children and grandchildren can participate together with grandparents and parents, fostering safe and open conversations. Young participants are also encouraged to invite their “silver-haired” friends (teachers, relatives, neighbors, etc.) to share the joy of the event.
The May 2026 event is co-organized by Cuội Theater and ICS Center, with the support of Goethe-Institut HCMC, under the patronage of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ho Chi Minh City.
The event is friendly to LGBTI+ individuals and families, with sign language interpretation support available.
The organizers believe that elderly people are like tall trees that provide shade and life to younger generations. Young people are like leaves, and green leaves exist because there are green trees. However, this connection is not always simply cause and effect. Trees and leaves can each be green in their own ways, and we need more spaces where generations can share knowledge, emotions, experiences, and joy in living to enrich one another’s lives.
