KFC, Pizza Hut Operator Launches US Bánh Mì Chain

While many U.S. sandwich shops have caught onto the magic that is bánh mì, it is still a relatively unknown dish to many Americans. One of the world’s largest fast food companies is seeking to change that, reports the Huffington Post.

Yum! Brands, the global operator of Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut is hoping to bring bánh mì to the American masses, launching their first store, “Banh Shop,” in Dallas, Texas.

New York Times Magazine article on bánh mì in February 2011 foretold the popularization of the Vietnamese sandwich:

“While these sandwiches, usually found in bakeries and delis in Vietnamese neighborhoods, are endlessly customizable, they should always be inexpensive...Beware the bánh mì over $6.”

The Dallas shop goes beyond this figure, offering up sandwiches at about $7 each while soups (presumably Vietnamese) will set one back about $8.

Yum! Plans to open a second Banh Shop later this month at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Great to see Vietnamese food go mainstream, but we’re not overly ecstatic about the fast-foodization of the cuisine.
