[Photos] Saigon Then & Now: Chợ Cũ

In today's Saigon, Chợ Cũ on Ton That Dam Street might appear like a derelict wet market, but in its heyday, the street used to be home to a bustling commercial area where merchants from all over Southeast Asia, India and China convened to conduct business.

In this collection of photos, Saigoneer takes a look at how the area surrounding the beloved market has transformed throughout the years. Many old buildings on Huynh Thuc Khang, Pasteur and Ham Nghi Streets, the three thoroughfares in the vicinity of the market, have been replaced by modern versions. However, one can spot a few colonial facades here and there hidden behind flashy new banners and shopfronts.
