The Quang Binh People’s Committee has given its stamp of approval on a new round of Son Doong Cave tours after they were suspended last week, according to Tuoi Tre.

Tours to Vietnam’s Son Doong Cave, the largest ever discovered, had been suspended following the conclusion of a one-year pilot program, reported Thanh Nien.

The program, which was run by Oxalis Adventure Tours, was approved by Quang Binh officials and allowed the company to lead tours of the cave between August 2013 and August 2014. The new tours will start in January and will be developed on a larger, more professional scale, said the Committee.

The current, 5-day tour (which cost $3,000 per person) teaches tourists “how to cross swift-flowing rivers and springs, climb rocky mountains with kits, explore grottos and master survival skills in extreme conditions,” in addition to 10km in daily hikes.

The cave is quickly becoming one of the country’s most valuable tourist attractions. Earlier this year, Vietnamese tourism officials said that tours of the cave were fully booked until 2015.

A local man, Ho Khanh, discovered Quang Binh Province’s Son Doong Cave in 1991, but it wasn’t until 2009 that a group of British cavers repelled into the cave and found a jungle, rivers and a vast array of wildlife inside.
