Zing reports that a second break has been found in the Asia America Gateway (AAG), pushing back the repair date from October 1 to October 5.
According to the management unit of the AAG, the second break was detected 68 kilometers from Hong Kong, not far from the known rupture which occurred on September 16.
The first broken segment will be fixed by September 29 and the second by October 3 with service finally returning to normal on October 5.
FPT Telecom general director, Nguyen Van Khoa has previously faulted the poor design quality of the cable for its frequent breaks:
“I must say that the AAG cable system was built to a below-standard technical design, which is the major reason behind its frequent fractures,” he told Tuoi Tre.
The $560 million system is a joint venture among 19 partners, including Vietnam’s Viettel, VNPT, FPT, and STP and had suffered at least 3 major service interruptions since 2009.
