Unlike the last time the Asia America Gateway cable ruptured, repairs won’t be completed ahead of schedule this time around.
According to the cable’s operator, Vietnam’s international internet connections should return to normal on January 24, one day later than planned, reports Thanh Nien.
Viettel said earlier this month that the undersea cable, which was damaged on January 5, would take three to four weeks to patch-up.
Though no reason has been given for the cause of the break, some have speculated that sharks, mistaking the cable for a school of fish, were to blame.
FPT Telecom officials have previously faulted the poor design quality of the notoriously unreliable, 20,000km, $560 million cable.
And if you’re hoping for a discount on your next internet bill after a month of shoddy service, don’t hold your breath.
