Hopefully you enjoyed the last 14 days of unfettered internet access because Vietnam’s notoriously fragile section of the Asia-America Gateway (AAG) cable has faltered once again.

The break occurred on what seems to be the most vulnerable section of the cable that runs between Vung Tau and Hong Kong.
A local internet provider told Zing that the suspected rupture occurred at 4:30pm this afternoon.
While there is no timetable for repairs, it took 19 days to fix the short circuit that knocked the cable out of commission in April.
Some blame sharks while others conjure up Chinese conspiracy theories, but FPT officials have faulted “below-standard technical design” for the regular breaks in the AAG cable.
“I must say that the AAG cable system was built to a below-standard technical design, which is the major reason behind its frequent fractures,” said Nguyen Van Khoa, general director of FPT Telecom.
The $560 million system is a joint venture among 19 partners, including Vietnam’s Viettel, VNPT, FPT, and STP.
