Hanoi might be the cheapest place in the world for tourists to visit this summer, but its residents have the highest living expenses in the country.

The distinction is based on new figures released by General Statistics Office last week, that compiled the costs of almost 1,600 products and services between 2012 and 2014, according to Thanh Nien.
Saigon, which held the title until 2012, fell to second place overall though it still led the way in some areas, such as education services, which are 70% higher compared to the capital.
“Some say the city's efforts to keep prices of food and clothing stable have worked,” wrote the paper.
Overall, prices in northern Vietnam have increased in recent years, even in poor areas like Dien Bien and Son La, while those in the south have fallen.
