Though the company has not yet decided upon a name for the stores, its first five shops will open in Saigon, selling fresh produce, fish and meat in an effort to attract supermarket customers and traditional markets.

Its year-long trial phase is expected to cost the company between VND20 billion and VND50 billion in investment. The project is an ambitious one: The Gioi Di Dong aims to have 6,000 to 8,000 stores open nationwide by 2020.

The Gioi Di Dong owns 30% of Vietnam's mobile market, with 450 stores nationwide and a revenue of VND12.92 trillion (US$566.26 million) through the first seven months of this year.
