Seven Ha Tinh officials are in hot water after they were caught violating the province’s administrative recommendation that government employees consume only locally-produced Bia Sai Gon.

Authorities took the matter so seriously that the seven Department of Education officials were required to submit self-critical reports, according to Thanh Nien.
At a recent department ceremony, the officials were spotted ordering other beers instead of Bia Sai Gon. Going against the recommendations of the local government, restaurant staff at the venue where the department ceremony was held reported the acts to provincial authorities.
“Some beer traders texted complaints to provincial leaders about the officials not drinking Sai Gon Beer,” department spokesman Du Ly Tri told Thanh Nien.
In an effort to garner more support for Vietnamese products made by Vietnamese people, an “I Love Saigon Beer” festival was held on September 1 in Ha Tinh. Attendance of government officials was mandatory at the event.
According to an unnamed official from the Ha Tinh Department of Industry and Trade, the brewery's VND380 billion (US$16.9 million) tax contribution to the province allows the government to encourage Bia Sai Gon consumption over other brands.
