Vietnam's First Billionaire Tops Richest People List

For the sixth year in a row, Pham Nhat Vuong, head of realty development giant Vingroup, is the richest man in Vietnam.

According to VNDIRECT Securities Corporation, which uses public information gathered from the nearly 700 businesses listed on the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City stock exchanges, Vuong once again topped its list of the 100 wealthiest people on the Vietnamese stock market, reports Tuoi Tre.

The Vingroup leader, whose total assets amount to VND24.33 trillion (US$1.9 billion), was also named Vietnam's first billionaire by Forbes.

They say it's lonely at the top, but it turns out Vuong is in good company, as the top five wealthiest players on the Vietnamese stock market also include his wife, Huong, whose assets come in at VND4.19 trillion (US$187.05 million), making her the first woman to hold the number three spot. Vuong's sister, Hang, also rounds out the list, taking the number five spot.

As for the rest of the heavy hitters on VNDIRECT's list, Tran Dinh Long, chairman of Hoa Phat Group, ranked second with assets are valued at VND5.38 trillion (US$240.18 million), while Hoang Anh Gia Lai chairman Doan Nguyen Duc came in fourth with VND3.61 trillion (US$161.16 million).

Overall, the total assets of Vietnam's wealthiest people climbed 2.6% this year, rounding out 2015 with VND83.65 trillion (US$3.7 billion).
