BackStories » Vietnam » Vinasun Launches Line of 'VIP Cars' to Compete With Uber, GrabCar

In an attempt to compete with car-hailing services like Uber and GrabCar, taxi firm Vinasun has launched a line of private vehicles to cater to its passengers.

The company debuted its very own taxi-hailing app last July, hoping to keep customers away from the competition, reports Tuoi Tre. Now, in addition to its standard four- and seven-seater taxis, Vinasun is offering “VIP cars” via the app.

Just like its competitors, VCar, as the service is known, sends modern, unmarked sedans to pick up passengers for a slightly higher rate than its standard vehicles; taxi rides cost VND16,500 per kilometer while VCars are VND17,000 per kilometer.

Currently, Vinasun has a fleet of less than 100 VCars, most of them Toyota Camrys and Fortuners purchased through the company's tourism outfit, Vinasun Travel. While Vinasun is optimistic about the new program, the company also acknowledges VCar's challenges moving forward, as the limited number of vehicles makes it difficult for users to successfully book a VIP vehicle.
