[UPDATED] Maintenance on the Asia America Gateway cable has been canceled, according to Thanh Nien. We're not sure if this is good news or bad given the section of cable linking Singapore and Vietnam has been ruptured since early February, however it does mean that we'll have (mostly) functional internet this weekend. Facebook/Twitter/Instagram your heart out.
Are you frustrated with your wireless internet provider? Do you experience anxiety at the sight of Apple's spinning color wheel of doom? Have you forgotten what it's like to watch a YouTube video entirely uninterrupted? Then, boy, do we have some upsetting news for you.
Beginning at 2pm on Friday, March 4, the Asia America Gateway (AAG) cable – whose exterior is considered especially delicious by sharks – will undergo maintenance, slowing down the cable's already sluggish internet connection.
This will result in slower internet for “some days”, reports Thanh Nien. The inconvenience will last until 4pm on Sunday, March 6.
Vietnam began using the AAG to connect its internet users in late 2009. The cable, which spans 20,000 kilometers and links Southeast Asia with the United States, broke twice in 2014 and three times in 2015.
Meanwhile, the Asia-Pacific Gateway cable connects Singapore, Malaysia and Da Nang with Japan and delivers a 54 terabits/second connection, roughly 20 times faster than the AAG's two terabits/second connection.
