This October, the National Assembly is expected to make some major changes to Vietnam’s constitution for the first time since 1992. One of the biggest modifications that may take place is a slight change to the country’s official name.
For some politicians, the current name, “The Socialist Republic of Vietnam,” is no longer accurate as the country’s economy moves away from socialism and towards the free market.
Dropping the word “socialist” would result in the name “The Republic of Vietnam,” which was the South’s pre-unification name so that’s clearly a no-go. As such, “The Democratic Republic of Vietnam” is standing out as the most likely choice.
What do you think of the proposed name change?
Edit: The original article mistranslated the proposed title. It has been changed from "People's Republic of Vietnam" to "Democratic Republic of Vietnam."
