A massive, 300kg bomb was discovered by a resident of Dak Ru Commune, Dak R'lap District in the central highlands province of Dak Nong.
The bomb, likely dropped by an American bomber, stretched 1.6m long and carried a Triton symbol, was found about 200m from a local road surrounded by sugar cane, cassava and maize fields.
The bomb has been reported to the provincial Military Headquarters who have cordoned off the area.
The United States dropped 7.8 million tons of munitions on Vietnam during the war, more than all the bombs dropped by the US on Germany and Japan combined during WWII. The same amount was fired from land and sea. An estimated 800,000 tons failed to detonate, contaminating around 20 percent of Vietnam's land.
In 2012, there were over 500 victims of unexploded ordnance in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
