Da Nang is putting its foot down when it comes to public littering, imposing fines on those who throw garbage anywhere but the trash can.
The city's People's Committee announced on Tuesday that all individuals and tourism outfits in the city will be subject to fines between VND50,000 and VND500,000 for littering on public beaches and in public restrooms, reports Tuoi Tre.
Particularly during tourism season, which runs from May to September, authorities will observe local beaches and public spaces in Son Tra and Ngu Hanh Son, levying fines on litterers. The first phase of the anti-littering program will be piloted at two beaches, Xuan Ha Beach in Thanh Ke District and Hoa Khanh Bac Beach in Lien Chieu District, beginning in July.
Specifically, tossing your cigarette butts on the ground will carry a fine of between VND50,000 and VND100,000, while disposing of domestic waste in “inappropriate locations in public places and service areas” will run between VND100,000 and VND200,000. Public urination and/or defecation will also be fined between VND200,000 and VND300,000, while domestic waste left on sidewalks or city streets incurs a charge of VND300,000 to VND400,000.
Last but not least, those who collect domestic waste “in a way that violates the environmental protection regulations” will be required to pay VND400,000 to VND500,000.
