Yesterday, Vietnamese swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien left the 10th Asian Swimming Championships (ASC) with some hardware, in addition to setting a new competition record in the women’s 400-meter individual medley last Thursday.
According to Zing, the swimming superstar, who picked up a staggering 10 medals at last year’s Southeast Asia Games, shattered the previous ASC women’s 400-meter individual medley record of 4:41.29 by clocking a 4:37.71.
Though her time is still well off the world record – 4:26.36 – the 20-year-old Can Tho native managed to take home not only a gold in the 400-meter individual medley but also three bronzes in the women’s 200-meter freestyle, 800-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley over the course of the four-day swimming competition.
Still, the new record is not Anh Vien’s fastest time in the 400-meter individual medley, her best event. At the 2016 Rio Olympics earlier this year, Vietnam’s star swimmer managed a 4:36.85 in the event, however with a deeper field of competitors she didn’t move past the qualifying round.
