Thanh Nien, citing Vietnam News, reports that Tourism Minister, Hoang Tuan Anh, pressed the issue at a meeting with the US State Department on Monday where he said that the country is aiming to attract one million American tourists annually by 2017.

Last year, 443,776 US citizens visited Vietnam, a 3% increase over 2013.

As it currently stands, tourist visas for American visitors are valid from 30 – 90 days.

The move comes as Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations enter their final stages and after the successful launch of European visa extensions that have helped spur an increase in international arrivals for the first time in 13 months.

Last month, the country announced plans to eliminate visas for overseas Vietnamese.
