Three hours from northern Vietnam's Cai Rong Port, Co To Island is one of the few island attractions which remains a mystery to most Vietnamese travelers.
The small island, 150 kilometers away from the melee of Ha Long Bay, is heavily protected thanks to its close proximity to the Chinese border, reports VnExpress. As a result, tourism is limited to the island, and foreigners must apply for a special visa in order to visit the 50-odd islands in the area. Still, both Vietnamese and foreign tourists would do well to take advantage of this untouched island before it gets too popular.
From rocky shores and green fields to fishing villages and pristine beaches, Co To is situated just beyond the natural charm of Bai Tu Long Bay, removed from the tourist crowds. Though its infrastructure is less developed than that of the mainland, Co To's natural beauty is enough to encourage travelers to make the trek.
However, given Co To's status as an “important strategic position” along the Chinese border, visitation is restricted by the authorities. In order to visit the island, travelers must provide officials with permission from their company in order to receive a special visa for the area. Still, given the immaculate landscapes of Co To, it's well worth the effort.
