It’s been a while since we checked in with the latest food trends in South Korea as Japan typically captures our gaze when it comes to outside-of-the-box food styles in Asia. But today, instead of arguing the finer points of cat wine and debating the taste of charcoal burgers, we take a look at Muk-bang (eating broadcasts).

These live-streaming food shows consist of a host, known as a Broadcast Jockey (BJ), who consumes copious amounts of food. Some of these pseudo-celebrities claim hundreds of thousands of fans and can earn up to US$9,000 per month.

Munchies, a series from Vice, recently kicked it with a bunch of BJs and their fans to see what Muk-bang is all about and the social and psychological factors that have contributed to its meteoric rise.
