Chinese Man Attempts to Board a Plane With Turtle Disguised as KFC Hamburger

Late last month, a Chinese national made a unique alteration to his KFC hamburger while attempting to board a flight from Guangzhou to Beijing.

According to the South China Morning Post, on July 29 a man named Li was stopped while passing through security at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport for China Southern Airlines flight 345 to the Chinese capital.

An X-ray screening machine detected “odd protrusions” coming out of a KFC burger which Li had in his carry-on luggage. Airport security staff, apparently experts in reptilian anatomy, thought the protrusions in question looked awfully similar to turtle legs, and asked to inspect the bag.

In what will go down among the all-time great airport security line conversations, Li reportedly replied, “there’s no turtle in there, just a hamburger.”

Unconvinced, the security staff repeated their request, and Li eventually gave in. Security then discovered exactly what they had suspected: Li had hidden his thoroughly confused pet turtle inside his hamburger. Airport staff explained that he could not smuggle his pet onto the flight, and a disheartened Li agreed to let a friend care for his beloved turtle while he was away.

Unsurprisingly, the curious incident attracted attention on Sina Weibo, China’s version of Facebook, with one user commenting: “That poor turtle! It had to absorb all those X-rays!”

It remains unclear if KFC plans to use this as inspiration to create another grotesque menu item in the spirit of their Double Down.
