Durian is a pretty polarizing topic. Either you have grown to love the thick, garbage-scented flesh of this Asian delight or you are nauseated by the thick, garbage-scented flesh of this Asian delight.
It turns out that Golden Globe-winning American actress Jessica Chastain loves what she refers to as the “blue cheese of fruits”.
During a recent appearance on late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live, the actress recounts her introduction to the fruit during a press tour for her latest film, The Huntsman, and brings talk show host Kimmel a large, spiky durian fruit to eat on live TV.
Together, the pair don rubber gloves, open the fruit and dig in. While Chastain is all smiles, Kimmel appears to be less enamored of the fruit.
“It's on the line between horrible and delicious,” he says through a mouthful of durian.
For a first-timer, that review is downright positive. In the past, other critics have been far less kind: famed chef Julia Child once referred to the durian smell as “dead babies mixed with strawberries and Camembert”.
