As part of the capital’s ongoing efforts to bolster the city’s global standing, authorities are developing a dossier to submit for Hanoi’s recognition as a UNESCO creative city.
UNESCO launched the Creative Cities Network in 2004 to promote cooperation among cities which recognize creativity as a significant factor in their development. The network recognizes craft and folk arts, media, film, design, gastronomy, literature and music as creative fields.
The main benefit of joining the network would be cooperation with other member cities, who must agree to invest in creativity, social inclusion and cultural vibrancy. Chiang Mai, Phuket and Singapore are among the recognized creative cities in Southeast Asia.
In order to create the dossier, experts will collect data on Vietnamese culture, including architecture, education, handicraft villages, literature and arts, among many others. Authorities will also hold seminars and workshops and set up a website for developing the dossier, Nhan Dan reports.
City authorities devised the plan on June 11 and aim to complete the dossier by the end of the month. A representative from Hanoi will visit France in November to receive the results of the application.
The initiative is part of a growing effort to place Hanoi firmly on the world map, having secured Vietnam’s first Formula One race for 2020 and hosting the Trump-Kim Summit.
