Enveloped by the elements, Japan’s capital is both mystifying and enchanting.
Winter is on its last leg in Japan, bringing cold weather and a thick blanket of snow across Tokyo’s cityscapes before spring arrives and hanami season comes in March. While the chilly weather chases the majority of the population to keep warm inside, Tokyo-based photographer Yusuke Komatsu finds the city’s wintry scenery a dreamy setting to break out his trusty camera.
Komatsu began his career as a graphic designer, according to Spoon & Tamago, but has been photographing his home city for almost a decade now. Komatsu’s works are usually a harmonious blend of weather elements, urban structures and people. But at times, the latter is merely silhouettes or anonymous outlines — insignificant entities amid the rigor of nature and towering cement blocks.
The photos below are part of Komatsu’s most well-known works, two collections called Rain in Tokyo and Snow in Tokyo, the subjects of which are self-explanatory. To view more photographs by Komastu, head to his Instagram here and official website here.
