Vietnam Climbs English Rankings In Recent Survey

Vietnam is climbing up the ranks of English proficiency based on a recent survey by Education First.

The 60 country survey saw Vietnam’s collective English skills trending upward with the country ranking 5th in pace of English acquisition, reflecting the importance placed on learning the language by both the government and individuals.

The glut of Foreign English teachers in Vietnam has contributed to the improved skills according to Tuoi Tre:

“English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers are a big part of the increased. Demand has attracted thousands of foreigners to teach English, with or without training and certification. In Hanoi alone, there might be 2,000 foreigners teaching English.”

In a recent systemic change, the HCMC University of Social Sciences announced that it would begin teaching all its classes in English by 2014.

Perhaps the country will reach its lofty goal of having all its college students to have a “confident level” of English by 2020 after all.
