Downtown Saigon’s modern makeover continues to take shape with the city government announcing plans for a new, 8-story trade center just across from the Saigon Opera House.

The $70 million development, currently under review by the municipal People’s Council, will stand between Lê Lợi, Nguyễn Huệ, Đồng Khởi and Nguyễn Thiệp Streets, replacing both colonial and modern structures which currently house local art shops and L’Usine, among other businesses and 129 private residences, reports Thanh Nien.
If approved, the committee will open the bidding process to investors for the 5,160sqm plot which will include a shopping mall, office buildings and luxury hotels.
Downtown Saigon, particularly the area between Ben Thanh Market and the Opera House, will soon shake off what remains of its colonial charm (with a few exceptions) in favor of a modern city center with projects including the city’s first metro line, a new Tax Center, The One Ho Chi Minh City and a massive pedestrian promenade.
