Vietnam’s 3G/4G Speeds Still Among World’s Slowest

Mobile internet speeds in Vietnam remain among the world's most sluggish, according to a recent survey.

Conducted by OpenSignal, a site that collects data on global mobile networks and produces apps to improve connections, the survey recorded responses from 822,556 users in 95 countries between May 1 and July 23, 2016.

According to the rankings, Vietnam came in at 82nd out of the 95 surveyed countries, with an average mobile network speed of 3.81Mbps. This anemic rate comes in only ahead of countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Togo, Pakistan, Senegal, Iraq and Afghanistan. Meanwhile, South Korea (41.34 Mbps) and Singapore (31.19 Mbps) led the pack.

This corroborates similar surveys which the global bandwidth testing company Ookla released last May, in which Vietnam ranked 114th out of 115 countries.

To address these lackluster speeds, local telecommunication firms have begun to roll out 4G in select Vietnamese cities. Reception to the new service has been poor, however, with many users reporting inconsistent connections and lack of coverage.

As of June 2015, there were 29.1 million 3G users in Vietnam, a 29.6 percent year-on-year increase.
