Vietnam’s favorite marine animal strikes again.
You might have noticed that just after Tet, watching Netflix has become a bit of an ordeal due to a sluggish Internet. Well, guess what? One of Vietnam’s undersea internet cables has been experiencing troubles again, news that we’re sure would surprise no one.
The connection in question is the Asia-Pacific Gateway (APG), a section of which went down around 6:30am on February 27, reports Tuoi Tre. The broken spot was determined to be about 125 kilometers off the coast of Hong Kong. However, local telecommunication companies shared that the Vietnam-Singapore route is still working as normal.
It’s still unclear at the time of writing when the problem will be fixed, but Vietnam’s internet service providers said that the issue will have minimal effect as other cables like the IA (Intra-Asia) and notoriously fragile AAG (Asia-America Gateway) are unaffected.
The APG began service in January 2017 after four years of construction. The 10,900-kilometer cable connects Vietnam with the rest of Asia-Pacific via Da Nang.
Tuoi Tre added that just before Tet, Viettel also included another submarine cable in the mix, the 25,000-kilometer Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1), which connects Southeast Asia with Europe through Egypt.
