There goes our plan to Netflix and chill all holiday weekend.
If your home internet connection has been sluggish for the last day or so, it’s because one of Vietnam’s submarine internet cables is out of service again. According to Tuoi Tre, a section of the Asia-Pacific Gateway (APG) is down, limiting Vietnam’s connectivity with the global network.
The breakage is near the Chongming connection point in China and occurred around 11:50pm on April 23. Local internet service providers are taking action by diverting Vietnam’s data to other functional cables while waiting for the breakage to be fixed in the next few weeks.
This is the second time the APG has broken this year. Previously the cable malfunctioned on February 27 and repairs were only completed on April 1. Just 22 days later, it looks like maintenance teams will have to make another trip out to sea.
Tuoi Tre also added that it might take two to three weeks to fix the issue, depending on weather conditions in the area. Repairing cables in Vietnam is a daunting task, as the optic fiber bundles are usually based in remote locations.
