Vietnam may want to start considering some đi bão gender equality.
While the men's U-22 football team gets ready to play for a shot at their first Southeast Asia Games gold medal, the women's team secured their second SEA Games gold in a row last night.
Tuoi Tre reports that the squad took down their Thai rivals 1-0 in Manila in a match that went 120 minutes due to extra time. The Vietnamese women already won the 2019 AFF Women's Championship, and also took home gold at the 2017 SEA Games in Malaysia.
Vietnam maintained consistent offensive pressure in the first half, while Thailand had a goal in the second half disallowed on an offside call. Regulation time ended with the score 0-0, and just two minutes into extra time, Pham Hai Yen broke the scoreless match by heading home a cross from Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung. The side then held on for the remainder of extra time.
This is this latest in a long line of SEA Games success for the Vietnamese women's team, which has now won six gold medals in the regional competition: 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2017 and this year.
The news source adds that by the end of Sunday night, Vietnamese athletes had brought home 66 gold, 59 silver, and 78 bronze models, second behind host country the Philippines.
The men's team went through to the finals after demolishing Cambodia 4-0 on Saturday. They play Indonesia at 7pm local time tomorrow night, where a victory will surely produce bedlam on the streets of Vietnam.
