Biên Hòa Citadel, originally built by the Khmer Chan Lap in the 14th and 15th centuries, has been approved for a VND14 Billion ($650,000) makeover.
Initially an earthen formation, the citadel came to its present configuration in 1837 under the Nguyễn Dynasty (1802 – 1945). During French occupation the citadel was reinforced with modern building materials, but the fort fell into disrepair after their and entered into a state of decay, sitting seemingly forgotten until recent years.
In 2010, VND41 billion ($1.9 million) was approved by the provincial People’s Committee, but the project never went forward due to a shortcoming in funding. The current renovation, which began last Thursday, is scheduled to be completed by 2017, according to Tuoi Tre.
It looks like the dichotomy of Saigon (it's close enough!) is alive and well with some buildings being preserved while others have become victims of the ever-looming wrecking ball.
