[Videos] Vietnam’s Urban Sewer Fishermen

Sewers across Saigon and Hanoi have become a paradise for urban fishermen. This video, recently posted on VN Express, shows a Saigon man dropping his line into the holes of a sewer cover to hook his catch.

Each day, hundreds of people pull fish from the city’s above ground and subterranean waterways for additional income and entertainment.

A proposal to prohibit fishing in all canals and lakes in Saigon is currently being considered by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The city's People’s Committee has also assigned the Transportation Department to put up signs along the Nhieu Loc and Tàu Hũ Canals (9km and 22km long, respectively) to make it clear that the act is prohibited. It’s unclear if such a ban is being considered for city sewers as well.
