If you're not French, you've probably never heard of AuchanSuper, but you're about to.
The European supermarket chain, which currently operates one store in District 5, is poised to open 17 more stores in Saigon by the end of 2016, reports Tuoi Tre.
The news came in a meeting last month between HCMC Deputy Chairman Le Thanh Liem and AuchanSuper CFO Philippe Delalande. The shops will operate under the same name as AuchanSuper's current Saigon location, Simply Market.
As for the company's expansion, AuchanSuper aims to open two new stores by the end of 2015 as well as another 15 next year, each of them 2,000-3,000 square meters in size. This project is expected to cost an estimated EUR€35-40 million and will give jobs to roughly 1,000 local workers.
AuchanSuper is keen to expand into Vietnam as the country's retail market continues to grow. The company currently operates in 15 countries around the world.
