When we last checked in on Nguyen Quoc Hoa, an eccentric Thai Binh businessman who enjoys building military-grade submarines in his spare time, he was putting the finishing touches on the Hoang Sa, a heavy-duty, high-tech mini sub.
Last week, VnExpress reported that Hoa went a step further and tossed his 9.5-meter-long submarine onto a truck, drove it out to a nearby lake and took the new vessel for a spin. In the video below, a group of supportive onlookers applaud as a smartly dressed Hoa steps into the tiny submarine before disappearing under three meters of water, only to re-emerge three hours later from the miniature underwater vessel.
The Hoang Sa is actually Hoa's second creation, preceded by the Truong Sa 1. Both were constructed using only Vietnamese materials, according to their creator. Though it's pretty impressive that he's built any submarines at all, the Hoang Sa is especially exciting because it features fancy new add-ons like computer-guided steering and can maneuver over mud and through shallow water.
