While the initial shock of the Panama Papers has slowly begun to subside, Vietnam's involvement in the massive data leak is only just beginning.
According to VietnamNet, a total of 189 individuals in Vietnam – both foreign and Vietnamese – have been linked to the largest ever release of information regarding offshore companies.
While being connected to these documents does not necessarily indicate legal wrongdoing, the 11.5 million leaked files include back door dealings by some 140 politicians in over 50 countries which have so far resulted in the resignation of Icelandic prime minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson as well as Spanish industry minister Jose Manuel Soria and much discussion surrounding several of the other names on the list.
According to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which released the full papers online on May 9, both locally owned and foreign-invested companies from Vietnam appear on the list, with most offshore businesses registered in the British Virgin Islands.
A total of 185 businesses on the list have operating addresses in Vietnam through 23 intermediaries, writes VnExpress.
Among the individuals listed in the Panama Papers are VietJet CEO Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao and her husband Nguyen Thanh Hung as well as former ANZ Vietnam CEO Dam Bich Thuy, the news outlet reports.
