Hanoi Woman Fined $260 for Littering

Last week, a woman in Hanoi was fined VND6 million for littering under a new regulation.

Vietnam News reports Hoan Kiem District police slapped the hefty fine on a woman caught littering on Phu Doan Street last Tuesday.

A new decree on penalties related to environmental protection went into effect on February 1, according to the news source. Under this decree, individuals can be fined VND5-7 million (US$218-306) for littering on streets and sidewalks. 

In a related campaign, the capital's Cau Giay District police levied fines worth over VND60 million (US$2,626) on 21 people for violations such as discharging waste water, littering, urinating in public and spilling construction material on the street.
