After getting the Prime Minister’s approval last September, construction of the Phan Thiet Airport is scheduled to commence this month according to provincial People’s Committee.
Officials hope that the domestic airport will help boost tourist and encourage investment in the Phan Thiet/Mui Ne tourist enclave which is currently only accessible by road and rail, according to Vietnam Net.
The first stage of construction of the VND5.6 trillion ($263.2 million) airport is slated be completed by 2020 and will serve 1 million passengers annually when the final phase is wrapped up in 2030, accommodating flights from Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, Cam Ranh in Khanh Hoa province, Buon Ma Thuot in Dak Lak, Phu Quoc in Kien Giang, and Da Nang city.
Though the airport won’t be completed until 2020, you can still fly to Phan Thiet with the recent introduction of seaplane service from HCMC.
While it will the city’s first civilian airport, Phan Thiet was once home to a US military airbase, LZ Betty, the remains of which can be seen in the video below.
