Prime Minister Signs Off On Phan Thiet Airport

Saigon might not be the only one who’s getting a shiny new airport.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has signed off on plans for the construction of Phan Thiet Airport which is scheduled to open between 2020 and 2030. Russians, rejoice!

The airport is a build-operate-transfer (BOT) project and part of Vietnam’s national aviation development plan for the 2020-2030 period. Once completed, it will be able to accommodate large planes including the Airbus A321, according to DTI News.

The plans have also been approved by “the People’s Committee of Binh Thuan Province, the ministries of Transport and National Defense and other related agencies,” according to the paper.

Now comes the hard part – securing funding (previous reports put the price tag at $270 million) using the BOT model which relies on investment from private companies. While this method has been used to fund roads and seaports in Vietnam, it has never been applied to an airport project.
