In 1940, Saigon was at its colonial height. While in May of that year, the Nazis began their invasion of France, the Vichy regime in Saigon retained the status quo in the city, one which would only be challenged with Japanese occupation in 1941.

Though conflict loomed in the background, on Saigon’s streets it was business as usual with vendors selling their wares, elaborate funeral processions marching through the streets and a bustling Ben Thanh Market.
